Case Summary:
For years, numerous correctional officers at CoreCivic’s private for-profit prison, Cimarron Correctional Facility, in Oklahoma raped and sexually assaulted inmates in their custody. Women at the facility were subjected to systemic rape facilitated by prison supervisors and kept silent through coercion, threats, and gifts. Despite obvious warning signs—including red flags identified by the facility’s warden—CoreCivic continued to place the women in situations where they knew they would be sexually harmed.
Cimarron is a medium security private prison that houses individuals in the custody of the U.S. Marshal Service and—as of February 2025—ICE detainees. CoreCivic, which owns and operates Cimarron, was formerly known as Corrections Corporation of America. The company rebranded in 2016 but continues to embody everything that is wrong with private for-profit prisons.
NPAP joins Oklahoma-based co-counsel Ron Jones of The Jones Firm who initially filed a complaint on behalf of Ashley Schardein. Our amended complaints adds plaintiffs Sydney Sisk and Ashton Mattingly, two women who were also raped and assaulted by correctional officers while incarcerated in Cimarron. The case brings claims under the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act, including sex trafficking, forced labor, and obstructing enforcement of related laws.
CoreCivic has a track record of putting profits before people at the cost of people’s lives, safety, and dignity. No one deserves to be subjected to repeated rape and sexual assault. Ashley Schardein, Sydney Sisk, and Ashton Mattingly deserve justice for the harms they endured, and the women of Cimarron deserve to live without fear of sexual violence in a place where they are hidden from public view and not free to leave their abusers.
