Case Summary:
Mr. Renney is a diabetic man who is incarcerated by the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) in its Limestone Correctional Facility. In early 2021, Mr. Renney developed a diabetic ulcer on his left big toe. Mr. Renney was seen by a podiatrist in April 2021, who recommended that he promptly undergo a surgical amputation of the tip of his left big toe to prevent the spread of infection. The medical staff at Limestone–employees of private medical contractor Wexford Health Sources–delayed this surgery for months and ignored Mr. Renney’s infection, causing it to spread. As a result of these delays and denials of treatment, Mr. Renney ultimately lost all of the toes on his left foot.
Mr. Renney’s experience, though horrific, is unfortunately not uncommon. ADOC’s understaffing and over-incarceration crisis, paired with its repeated condonation of Wexford’s deficient practices, has caused numerous individuals in ADOC custody to suffer inhumane and inadequate medical care. Through this lawsuit, we aim to obtain justice for Mr. Renney and to rectify the deficiencies in ADOC’s and Wexford’s underlying policies and practices so that no other individual in ADOC custody is subjected to this brutal lack of treatment.
