Ordonez-Vargas v. Orange County

Location: New York

Co-Counsel: Cohen & Green PLLC; CUNY Civil Rights Law Clinic

Case Summary

Maria Ordonez-Vargas is a transgender immigrant woman from Nicaragua who was arrested by ICE and detained in Orange County jail where Wellpath was the medical provider.  When Ms. Ordonez-Vargas was detained, she had a fractured nose and was scheduled for surgery later that day. She disclosed at booking that the surgery was urgent and provided her doctor’s contact information. However, her doctor’s orders were ignored. She suffered in pain pleading for medication and to see her doctor to no avail. Ms. Ordonez-Vargas was left for weeks to suffer in pain and will have possible permanent deformities due to Wellpath and the jail failing to treat her nose injury. In addition, her nose will likely need to be re-broken before she can receive appropriate treatment due to the defendants’ failure to provide care. NPAP’s work on behalf of Ms. Ordonez-Vargas is part of our work to hold Wellpath accountable.
